By now you’ve probably heard of AI technology and wondered, “What is AI really?” Artificial intelligence (AI) is a type of technology that thinks and problem solves for itself. You may also hear AI called machine learning. AI is changing tech in huge ways. Believe it or not, AI is all around you every day. You may not even realize that you use it on a day-to-day basis! Here are just some of the ways we are putting AI to use.

One application of AI in tech is its use in giving recommendations for videos to view or songs to listen to. By considering the history of what you’ve watched or listened to, streaming apps like Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, and Spotify are able to suggest more programs and music that you may like.
AI Technology: Alexa and Siri
Virtual assistants like Alexa and Siri are also built on AI technology. AI is what gives them the ability to understand speech and respond. Siri can even tell jokes! Voice technology also has more practical applications like routing your phone calls or turning lights and thermostats on and off in a smart home.
AI in Self-Driving Cars
AI has become so advanced that it is even the force behind self-driving cars. It can automatically detect people and other cars, stay in a particular lane, switch lanes, and follow the GPS to navigate to a destination. There are actually six levels of automation when it comes to cars:
- No automation
- Driver assistance
- Partial automation
- Conditional automation
- High automation
- Full automation
Self-driving cars like those made by Tesla are still only at the partial automation level where there is a human driver. Computer driving is considered to take over when you get to conditional automation. Conditional automation is when automation is able to control steering and speed, but can’t control all driving in all conditions. A human is still needed to initiate some actions when driving and provide oversight. Self-driving car AI has to do three main tasks, it needs to sense, understand, and control. They accomplish this through sensors, cameras, AI algorithms, and advanced computing.
Smart Agriculture with AI
In addition to cars, AI has begun to power self-driving tractors. It is becoming a real game-changer in agriculture! Monitoring and analyzing crops with drones and using advanced irrigation systems are also employing AI to grow smarter crops that utilize fewer resources. From robotics to replace human labor to more predictable crop yields and crop monitoring, AI is changing the way we farm.
AI for Deepfakes
Deepfakes are expertly crafted digital media alterations. This expert-level impersonation is possible thanks to AI technology. You may have heard about these recently because of their ability to turn anyone into a celebrity on video. Deepfakes are a big concern because they have been linked to fake news, defamation, and online bullying. Deepfakes utilize some amazing technology but they are also a reminder as to why it is a very bad idea to get your news from social media instead of a legitimate traditional news outlet.
