Rural Internet Questions Answered
When cable, DSL, or fiber are not available, fixed wireless internet service is the best rural internet service.
Webformix is the best rural internet provider for Central and Southern Oregon, with an average Google rating of 4.9.
Rural broadband is an internet service provided to small communities that can achieve speeds of 25 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload or better.
You can get internet in the country, but you may need to use a less common type of internet services such as fixed wireless internet, mobile wireless internet (hotspots), or satellite internet.
It will take some time for 5G to be available in rural areas. Currently, providers are still working to ensure that rural locations have 4G since 3G networks are shutting down. The FCC is providing additional funding to encourage cellular networks to expand faster network coverage to rural locations, but deployment costs make it harder for companies to bring faster technology to rural places.
Yes, you can get wireless internet without a phone line. Wireless internet comes from communication towers and travels via radio frequencies so no phone or cable line is needed.
5g fixed wireless access is a very inaccurate and confusing term. 5g is the 5th generation cellular network and is used for mobile phones. Fixed wireless internet can utilize the 5 GHz radio wavelength. Some unscrupulous fixed wireless vendors are using the term "5g" inaccurately in order to attract more customers.
Questions About Internet for Gaming
1-5 Mbps download and 1-5 Mbps upload speed is sufficient for gaming. Downloading games can take more or less time depending on your internet connection speed. Playing games does not require as much bandwidth as downloading them does.
You can have great internet for gaming from nearly any internet provider. Even with fixed wireless internet from Webformix, our slowest internet package is still enough speed for gaming. However, satellite internet can be problematic for gaming due to latency.
Fixed wireless dish internet, where you have a radio antenna "dish" on your roof, is great for gaming. It is a much better option than satellite because the connection is more reliable and has lower latency.
1-5 Mbps download and 1-5 Mbps upload speed are good Mbps for gaming. Online gaming requires very little bandwidth because the media for the game is part of the installation files.
Satellite internet is not good for gaming because it has high latency, can be disrupted by the weather, and can take a long time to download game installation files. Some satellite internet plans also have data caps that can result in overage charges if you spend a lot of time gaming.
WiFi is great for gaming, but if you do feel there may be a connection issue, you can connect to your router with an ethernet cable to see if the connection is better.
WiFi Questions Answered
The quality of your WiFi depends on a few different factors. The best WiFi service will come from a good wireless router that is well-positioned and having a good internet plan that provides enough speed for your devices and use habits. If your WiFi service is bad you may consider the following solutions:
- Get a new wireless router (they don't last forever)
- If you are losing signal in your house, try getting a WiFi extender or moving the router
- Using too many devices at once can reduce your speeds, make sure you are managing your home network to prevent devices from overloading your internet connection
- Try connecting to your router directly, if speeds are still low your internet plan may be the issue
- Call your internet service provider to see if you need to switch to a different plan or if they are having technical difficultires
WiFi is a radio frequency that works on the 2.4 GHz and/or 5 GHz bandwidths.
The only way to get WiFi without an internet provider is to use a hotspot from your cell phone or use public WiFi.
You can get WiFi without going through a cable company by using a different type of internet service provider (DSL, wireless, or satellite internet). You can also use a hot spot from your cell phone or take advantage of public WiFi where it is available.
It is not necessary to have cable in order to get WiFi. Cable internet companies will offer bundles, but you can opt to only get their internet service. There are also options for internet service that do not use a cable line. These include DSL internet (phone line), fixed wireless internet, mobile wireless internet, and satellite internet.
The cost of home WiFi will differ based on the internet plan that you choose, the router you purchase will also impact the cost. Some internet plans are as cheap as $50 per month, while other deluxe internet plans can cost over $100 per month. The cost of a wireless router can be as low as $40, but some spaces will require a more robust router that is rated for use in a larger space.
There is no such thing as a "WiFi tower." WiFi is the signal that your internet router sends out to devices. Communication towers (cellular towers) may serve your home's radio antenna (dish on the roof) if you have wireless internet, but your WiFi is just a signal that comes from your router.
The only thing that might resemble a "WiFi antenna" is the antennas that are present on some wireless router models. Routers don't all need to have antennas, depending on their construction, but some do. If you are a fixed wireless internet user you will have a radio antenna that is mounted to your roof. However, that radio antenna does not provide WiFi. It transmits your internet signal to the router which is the hardware responsible for providing WiFi.
There is no best WiFi radio because such a thing does not exist. You get WiFi from a wireless router. The best wireless router will be one that is cost-effective and also rated for the square footage of your space.
The difference between WiFi and broadband is that WiFi is an internet signal that comes from your router. Broadband is an internet speed that is at least 25 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload. If you have a broadband internet plan, then your WiFi connection will allow your devices to use the internet at broadband speeds.
Coaxial cable and ethernet cannot be used to connect your PC to WiFi. Your PC needs to have a wireless card to connect to WiFi. Whether you have cable internet, DSL internet, or wireless internet, the PC can only utilize WiFi (which comes from your router) if it has a wireless card or USB wireless adapter. If your PC does not have WiFi capabilities, you can still connect to the internet without WiFi. Simply connect your PC to your router with an ethernet cable.
The only companies that do not offer WiFi are dial-up internet companies. All other types of internet offer WiFi for home. You simply need to have a wireless router in order to access your internet connection via WiFi.
WiFi is not "line of sight" like fixed wireless internet service. WiFi broadcasts through the walls and furniture in your home and you do not have to be within sight of your router.
Traditional WiFi connects you to the internet, but WiFi direct connects your devices. WiFi direct can connect devices directly without the need for a router to act as an access point, it also utilizes the most advanced security protocols. The main advantage of WiFi direct is that it allows devices in the same room to connect to each other so you can do things like printing from your smartphone or share pictures to another device. These activities don't really utilize the internet, but they require a wireless connection.
For most people, WiFi is better than MiFi. However, if you are traveling and do not want to exhaust your data plan, MiFi can be a great option. MiFi is a special router that works like a mobile hotspot. It provides portable internet access via a cellular network connection. Since many phones have built-in hotspots and data plans are getting cheaper, MiFi devices are becoming less utilized.
Cable is different than WiFi because cable connections for TV or internet utilize coaxial cable. This fixed cable line is just one way to get an internet connection. Cable internet, or another type of internet, is required in order to get internet service. WiFi is just the wireless broadcast of your internet signal.
The SSID number is the identifying name you see on the list of WiFi networks. It is located on a sticker on the bottom of your router or in the instruction manual. You can change your SSID by accessing your router's settings on a computer.
Most desktop computers have built-in wireless capability. If your computer did not come with WiFi capability, you can get a WiFi adapter to convert the desktop computer to wireless.
On a computer, phone, or tablet, you can turn on wireless capability through the WiFi icon or settings menu.
The best location for a router is in a central location that is elevated off the ground.
